Home DestinationsDestination: Austria Where to go this winter for the perfect Ski Chalet Holiday

Autumn is well and truly with us here in Britain, and now the clocks have gone back and the evenings are drawing in, many people are thinking about the upcoming ski season and getting away from those dreary winter days, dusting off the ski boots and skis and looking forward to some bright sunshine and crisp white snow.

Here at Our Man On The Ground we have been receiving press releases for the Austrian, French and Swiss Alps as well as North America, but with so many wonderful ski resorts and places to stay it can be hard to choose where to go.

In this article for the new ski season we have picked three ski resorts in the Alps we particularly like that may help you with your decision on where to go this winter and make the most of the snow.

Grindelwald in Switzerland

The Jungfrau region in Switzerland’s Bernese Oberland has around 214 kilometres of ski runs as well as the longest cable car in Europe to Männlichen. It is also well known for Switzerland’s famous Eiger, and of course the north face being one of the world’s most challenging mountains to climb. Then there is the Jungfrau which is accessible via the highest mountain railway system in Europe.

One of the region’s prettiest and perhaps liveliest villages is Grindelwald which stands at the foot of the Eiger and a focal point for climbers eager to scale the north face.

For the non-skiers amongst you, Grindelwald has 90 kilometres of toboggan runs and plenty of trails and mountain huts to stop off at and enjoy a warm cup of gluhwein.

The nearest airport is Zurich which is a three hour train ride.

Zillertal in Austria

With over 400 kilometres of ski runs and some 84 lifts following a fairly recent investment programme, Lech am Arlberg is the ideal resort for families and has a very good selection of four and five star hotels and high quality chalets.

This smart, pretty resort is well known for its Austrian hospitality with over 72 restaurants to choose from including plenty of sun-drenched mountain restaurants for those long lazy lunches in the spring. Lech is also very easy to get to with Innsbruck airport just over an hour away.

With over 400 ski instructors, Lech caters for all levels of skiing, be it your first time out onto the slopes or a more seasoned skier or snow boarder looking for some great off-piste skiing in fresh powder.

Thanks to the greatly improved lift system it is now much easier to get to Lech’s neighbouring villages in this Arlberg region of Austria, which include Zürs, the picturesque St. Christoph and the much larger St. Anton
